Privacy Policy

Last updated: December 2024

Syntaxis is designed with privacy as a core principle. This policy explains what data we collect (almost none) and how your information is handled.

The short version

  • Your text never leaves your device
  • We don't collect, store, or transmit your writing
  • We don't use analytics or tracking
  • Settings sync through your Chrome account, not our servers

What we DON'T collect

  • Text you type or proofread
  • Websites you visit
  • Browsing history
  • Personal information
  • Usage analytics or telemetry

All AI processing happens locally on your device using Google's MediaPipe framework and the Gemma language model. Your text is processed in your browser's memory and is never transmitted anywhere.

What IS stored

Settings & Preferences

Your preferences—correction strength, custom instructions, blocked sites—are saved using Chrome's built-in storage. If you're signed into Chrome, these settings sync across your devices through your Google account. We never see this data; it's handled entirely by Chrome.

License Verification

When you purchase Syntaxis Pro, license validation happens through the Chrome Web Store Payments API. Google handles all payment processing. We receive confirmation that you have a valid license, but no payment details.

Sensitive site protection

Syntaxis automatically disables on sensitive websites (banking, healthcare, government portals) using a local pattern list. This detection happens entirely on your device—we don't know which sites you visit.

Third-party services

  • Google Chrome Web Store: License verification and payment processing
  • Google Chrome Sync: Settings synchronization (if enabled in your browser)

No other third-party services are used. We don't use Google Analytics, advertising networks, or any tracking tools.

Data retention

Since we don't collect your data, there's nothing to retain or delete. Your text exists only in your browser's memory during processing and is discarded immediately after.

Children's privacy

Syntaxis does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under 13.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy, we'll post the changes here with a new "last updated" date. For significant changes, we'll notify users through the extension.

Summary

We built Syntaxis specifically so your writing stays private. The text you proofread never touches our servers because it never leaves your computer. That's not a policy choice—it's how the software works.
